In 2026, the leaders of Russia and India plan to meet twice. The first meeting is expected to take place in September during Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi for the BRICS summit. Earlier, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia will occur before the end of the year.
President Putin’s trip to the BRICS summit in New Delhi, scheduled for September 13–14, was announced by presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. However, Putin and Modi’s interaction in New Delhi will not be their only contact this year. Russian and Indian capitals are continuing preparations for the annual meeting, which is expected to take place in Russia after the BRICS summit.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed his place in the schedule for a visit to Russia this year. Previously, during a working visit to New Delhi, the Foreign Minister took part in a meeting of the heads of the diplomatic agencies of BRICS countries and held a separate meeting with India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
“We meet at a time of significant changes in international relations. Ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainty and challenges in the areas of trade and technology are shaping the modern global landscape,” Jaishankar said, making it clear that this should not affect the strategic partnership between the two countries.
During the meeting, Jaishankar emphasized that over the past few years there has been a steady, onward growth in Russia–India cooperation, and that the economic and energy dimensions have become even more important. Therefore, the leaders’ meetings, he said, “serve as a reliable benchmark for further development of ties”.
The most recent meeting between Putin and Modi took place in India on December 4–5, 2025. Following the talks, the leaders set a strategic goal for the Russia–India partnership: to raise the level of mutual trade to $100 billion by 2030. The relevant agencies were tasked with accelerating preparations for signing an agreement on free trade between the Eurasian Economic Union and India.
