At the beginning of June Russia and India signed an agreement on cooperation aimed at combating unsafe food products. The document is intended to open up new opportunities for the rapid exchange of information and scientific collaboration.
The agreement was signed by Anna Popova, head of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor), and Shri Rajit Punnhani, Director General of the Food Safety and Standards Authority under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Republic of India.
The agreement includes joint research on antimicrobial resistance and training for Indian specialists. It is expected that joint work in this area will help strengthen cooperation between the organizations and reduce the threats to public health in both countries from unsafe food products.
Since 2017 Rospotrebnadzor has been helping countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia combat antimicrobial resistance. As part of the program a regional laboratory network on antimicrobial resistance in food and agricultural products is operating. It includes eighteen institutions in seven partner countries. The colleagues have conducted more than one million tests for antibiotic residues in food products and trained over 850 people.
